An article in The Wall Street Journal on June 24, 2009, profiles a local rug merchant who has continuously advertised Going Out of Business and liquidation sales and also features the advertising review program of the Better Business Bureau serving Dallas and Northeast Texas.
Focusing on Cyrus Rug Gallery, Dallas, and its owner, Cyrus Hassandola, the story is titled, "In Texas, There's No Business Like 'Going Out of Business'," and sub-titled, "Owner Alters Rug Shop's Controversial Name but the Haggling Goes On and On".
As the BBB reported in December, 2007, when the store first opened, signs out front claimed "Going Out of Business". It turned out that the name of the store was registered as Going Out of Business. The owner also claimed he was selling merchandise from stores that were going out of business.
"I understand the desire to stay in business," says David Beasley of the local Ad Review program at BBB Dallas. "But you can't do it by going out of business."
Now the store is called Cyrus Rug Gallery, and the signs say "Liquidation Sale". Cyrus Rug Gallery is one of several businesses challenged by the BBB recently for advertising Going Out of Business or liquidation sales. Cyrus Rug Gallery has a BBB rating of “F,” due to multiple advertising standard violations within the last 36 months.
